Mindfulness in Prisons

Mindfulness benefits us all. It helps us find a space to breathe a little easier.

Many of our Prisons still experience restricted Regimes as the workforce slowly recovers from the fall out of Covid. 

Now more than ever, a Mindful approach to our Prisoners, our Officers, Staff and Prison System is important.

The use of Mindful practice reduces the likelihood of self-harm. And it does this by helping prisoners see life in a better perspective.

When life’s more in balance, we’re more likely to seek long–term solutions. Where there’s hope there’s opportunity for change, and the potential for change is unlimited and exciting.

I’ve worked in Prison Education for many years, first delivering English and Maths Assessments, then as an HMP Exam Officer.

During this process I’ve had 6 Meditation recordings aired on our in-house TV system (WayOutTV) going out to 55,000 prisoners a day in over 70 prisons.

I’ve delivered Mindfulness workshops at conferences (The Exams Office), contribute Well Being articles to the new NAEO National Exam Officers Organisation as their Mindfulness Expert, sit on their National Standards Panel and in 2021 co-wrote our new in-cell pack on Mindfulness.

Outside of Prison, I’ve created specialist online courses on Mindfulness for Exams (Developing the Exam Mindset),  and offer Mindfulness CPD workshops and training.

I’ve been a lifelong student of Personal Development having followed the teachings of many notable leaders in this important area (i.e. Brendon Burchard, Wayne Dyer, Tony Robbins).

I can make the complex relevant and help people relate to theory.

Mindfulness isn’t complicated – though we often make it so. The key is to bring in some sort of mindful exercise to our everyday life, and to make it relevant.

When something works, we’re more likely to stick with it.

I've seen Mindfulness work and  I’m developing Mindfulness programmes for the whole  prison estate – Officers, Agency Workers, Education Department and Prisoners.

One of the many reasons ‘leaving Officers’ cite is lack of support. Mindfulness training that gives the individual knowledge of practical techniques to manage and release stress is the solution. When we have ways to handle our own well being we can practice non invasive and self administered solutions

Then everyone benefits.

Mindful solutions can help all of us who work in Prisons.

If we share Mindful approaches throughout our prison environments, we’re more likely to build a strong resilient team that manages stress, handles challenge, acts from a place of Grace and speaks from the heart.

It can be done, and change is on the way.
