THE THINKING WELL COLLECTION

Take Five

Pause • Breathe • Notice • Choose • Respond

When things get a bit much, do students know what they can do next?

Students can feel worried, frustrated, overwhelmed or under pressure — sometimes before they have the words to explain what is happening. Take Five gives them five simple practices to help them pause, notice what’s happening and choose what might help next.

Use Take Five your way

Tutor time, pastoral support, small groups, SEND support, wellbeing work or individual student support.

Take Five is designed to be flexible. Introduce the practices when students are relatively settled, then give them opportunities to discover which approaches may help them at different times.

The aim isn't for every student to use the same strategy. It's to help students build familiarity with different ways to pause, notice and choose what happens next.

As students become more familiar with the practices, they can begin to:

Notice IF they need to Take Five
Decide WHEN they can Take Five
Choose WHAT might help

The goal is growing independence — and supporting students to return to learning.
