Agency staff are a vital part of the Prison Support process

Working within the Prison System, you’ll be interacting every day with Officers and Prisoners. You’ll know how important it is to communicate well with everyone, to be respectful, listen well, bring your A Game, and be on top of things.

Prison is no place to be feeling under par, less than great at managing stress, over-reacting to certain triggers, anxious of the day ahead or poor at balancing work/life stress.

Mindful approaches to your day, to yourself, to others, and to life, helps put back the balance into life and find gentle ways of dealing with what comes around.

Having worked for the past 14 years in a B category male prison, I know how vital it is for services to mindful of how they communicate amongst themselves, within the Prison System and with each other.

Each approach demands respect.

Applying a Mindful approach to your communication will ensure your staff are operating from the highest level, in delivering examples of best practice and maintaining standards of behaviour.

Agencies need the support and recognition of the Prison System. When staff demonstrate high levels of emotional intelligence, you can be sure you’re building a strong considerate team with a common vision.

There are 2 ways Agency Staff Training can be delivered.

  1. Through your Prison Led Training Service
  2. Through your own Agency Training Departments

FAQS

You’ll want to be sure that Agency Staff demonstrate a mindful approach to managing their workload and handling personal stress.

Although you may have a variety of systems in place such as Staff Support services, helplines and anonymous reporting, providing specialist Mindfulness training shows your commitment to estate-wide staff welfare.

You may choose to offer Mindfulness as part of Prison Wellbeing CPD training, via Agency Training Days direct to the Agency, or via on-line courses.

Providing Agency Staff Training though Prison led training gives you confidence that you’ve met your training responsibilities and brought everyone working in your establishment up to date on your vision. You can’t rely on Agencies themselves to train their staff in Mindfulness.

Being proactive allows you to roll out Mindfulness in a joined up way, building on any investment in Officer Training and/or Listener Training.

Sharing Mindfulness can help valued teachers and admin feel supported. It gives them guidance in handling stress.

If you’re also investing in Mindfulness Workbooks, it shares your commitment to the whole team, lets them know why you’re choosing to implement a Mindfulness programme and shares the what, why and how that you’re introducing to your Prison Learners.

If Mindfulness is a core vision of your Prison System, it helps educate staff by sharing the bigger picture.

Share ways to manage their levels of stress, find a space to breathe and communicate with grace.

A mindful way of working and being will improve personal well being, increase resilience and reduce absenteeism.

"It is so refreshing to find a course which is easy to follow, simple to engage with and complete, and which gives some excellent hints and tips on how relatively small changes can help to develop a much more positive, relaxed and stress-free perspective on an individual's life and approach to everyday activities. The language used is appropriate and easy to understand and the content encourages users to not only consider personal circumstances, but also how to develop and improve senses and feelings with simple everyday activities and techniques."

Jugjit Chima
Head of Training, The Exams Office

"This course is amazing from start to finish. All I wanted to do was read and see what was said and then go to the next part to see what was next and learn some more. It kept me interested from the beginning. The content was plentiful without being boring or repetitive I loved the fact that you could press complete, which gives a real sense of satisfaction and that also meant you could come back to the course at any time and know where you were at – very useful. I listened to the mindfulness recordings and watched the videos and felt completely relaxed and excited to listen to more and move on with the course. I have to say this exceeded my expectations and was a professional, warm, encouraging, fascinating and interesting course and I don’t doubt that it will be a huge success "
